Are iPods able to play music that you download from the internet (like bit torrent or Limewire)?

I hear they are usually incompatible with playing music other than music you have to download through i tunes. Can they play music you rip from a cd? Are they able to download mp3s you get from bit torrent sites or Limewire? How is the battery life generally? Does the device last a long time without breaking?
